During World War II, Kensington Palace suffered significant damage from bombing raids by the Luftwaffe, particularly the State Apartments. The palace was hit during the feared Blitz of 1940, with the Queen’s Drawing Room gutted by bombs & resulting fires. The North side of the Palace also suffered extensive damage. Copies of important artworks were made to preserve them in case of destruction. The palace was closed for repairs and then finally reopened in 1949.
